STEM Girls Tech Event at McIntyre Hall

On Tuesday, May 15th, Skagit Valley College at Mcintyre Hall hosted a STEM focused Girls Tech Event with speakers from Microsoft, Amazon, FaceBook, Whatcom Community College and Windermere. The goal was to bring women with positions of leadership to speak from their experiences and into the lives of girls from Skagit and Snohomish counties. The event was organized by 14-year-old Alex Shepler. Marla and Alex

Alex has been coding since he was 11 years old and can now code in 7 different languages. He has spent the last year lecturing to young people about the importance of education.  “Don’t be a surface learner,” is Alex’s mantra.

Through these lectures, Alex noticed the disparity between males and females who attend computer science classes in college compared to younger students.  “In the classes he taught to middle school kids, the groups have been evenly split, boys and girls,” said Alex’s father, Jim Shepler. “But at the college level, it looks more like 5 to 1 males to females.”

To combat this, Alex is encouraging young women to think outside the box about their futures and the integral part that technology has in the changing career landscape. Since STEM-focused education is an interdisciplinary approach combining academic concepts and real world lessons, Alex invited successful female leaders to speak to 8th and 9th grade students from local school districts.

“The event was a great success,” said Marla. “It was wonderful to see the students engaging with such strong, successful women. I was honored to be there.”

Camano Island Studio Tour – Artists Spotlight

If you missed last weekend’s opening, you still have next Saturday and Sunday to take advantage of this creative adventure! John Ebner’s vibrant water color painting of boats on the shore at Country Club with Mt. Baker in the background was selected as the cover art for this 20th year of the Camano Island Studio Tour.  As one of their few remaining founders, John Ebner has been at his craft since 1973. BeJohnEbnerginning in watercolor, he now employees alcohol inks, poured acrylics and epoxy resins in his work. He paints the rain, mist and many moods of the Pacific Northwest with vitality and sensitivity. A visit to his studio includes a garden walk which also showcases his meticulous attention to detail.

Another artist whose gardens have been a tour favorite for years is Betty Dorotik. Organized wildness with a view of over 500 rose bushes and the Saratoga Passage, makes her studio a must see. The gated garden has trails and a small pond pluBetty Dorotiks a garden house filled with a collection of plants, birdhouses, books and other curiosities. Garden areas are separated with decking to create contemplative ‘rooms’, which encourage venturing on to the next space. Betty Dorotik’s art is inspired by her love of gardening. Her wildlife paintings are a perfect extension of her life ‘outside’. Alas, after 18 years as a participating member of the Studio Tour, this year will be her last. Come and enjoy the view and whimsical creativity.

With their vast collective work, artists representing mixed media to photography – sculptures in glass, metal and wood- ceramics, jewelry and textiles, open their doors to engage, enlighten and raise scholarship monies for aspiring art students at Stanwood High School.
